The Akan Crown ring is a take on antique gold jewellery from the Baule Akans, an ethnic group from Ivory Coast. Known for their intricate metal work and their love of gold, Baule people would often wear large pieces of gold jewellery as a show of status. “From ancient times gold nuggets have been pierced and worn as ornaments. They were regarded as possessing a spirit that could confer magical protection on the wearer. Such nuggets can still be seen on the bracelets and necklaces of Akan chiefs.” [Timothy F. Garrard, 1989: Gold of Africa, Prestel]
