To See Takes Time

The artist Georgia O’Keefe wrote, “nobody sees a flower—really—it is so small—we haven’t time—and to see takes time, like to have a friend takes time.” The notion of pausing to really see, understand, and cultivate relationships relates to how the subject of the portrait, Teresa Christmas, teaches young people in the United States to take the time to understand people different from themselves. Teresa builds bridges in the community of Bowling Green, Kentucky.

In bust of this portrait, the artist stamped O’Keefe’s words alongside these words from an interview with Teresa: “I see one big human experience, and the more we learn about the art of other people and other cultures, the more we see what all humans have in common.”
